The story behind Umé

Umé is more than a name – it is a tribute.
The name comes from my grandmother, a woman who inspired me from a young age with her strength, her gentleness, and her love of craftsmanship. Although she wasn't necessarily known for her clothing style, she brought her creativity to life in her knitting and handmade "paintings." I proudly carry on this passion for craftsmanship and attention to detail.

My heart has longed for India for years – a country I still dream of visiting someday. I'm fascinated by the rich textile traditions, the vibrant colors, and especially the love and dedication with which they work. The block printing technique, in which woodcuts are hand-pressed onto fabric, never ceases to intrigue me. Every print, every imperfection, every color detail tells a story of time, dedication, and tradition.

The tote bags you'll find at Umé are all handmade in India, often in small batches, precisely because so much care and craftsmanship goes into each one. They're colorful, unique, and always imbued with character—just like my grandmother was.

With Umé, I combine my love for India and its people with my personal history. I hope you'll find a piece of warmth, strength, and beauty in every bag—something to cherish, use, and remind you of something special every day.
